Thrilled and rather overwhelmed to share that I’ve been awarded “Best Communicator” at the Indian Responsible Tourism Awards 2020 by @outlook_responsibletourism @outlooktraveller ☺️⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This journey towards advocating for responsible, meaningful, environmentally-friendly and socially-beneficial travel began way back in 2011, when I took a sabbatical from my full-time job in Singapore to volunteer-travel with @spitiecosphere in the Indian Himalayas. If you’ve read my book, you probably know that that experience changed my life in many ways. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It also changed the way I travel – and write about travel. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Over the years though, a lot has changed. Instagram has exploded, SEO has made quality travel content take a back seat and fashion has tried to hijack travel. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Focusing on storytelling, in a way that compels responsible travel without necessarily using the word responsible, has often been challenging. Filled with self-doubt infact. Although I continue to grapple with my direction in life, it sure feels reassuring to think that some of India’s leading conservationists, editors and thinkers (who were part of the jury) think my work counts 🙏⁣ ⁣⁣ I took my precious few moments on stage to talk about why we need to include domesticated animals (not just wildlife) in the sustainable tourism conversation – given that food is an essential part of travel and the carbon footprint of animal based diets is 7 times higher than the entire aviation industry (and the animal cruelty of course)!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So I want to take this post to shout out to fellow shortlisted bloggers @soultravelblog @breathedreamgo and @untamed_bachelor (who won silver) for their work. And the entire RT community in India (especially Ishita Khanna @spitiecosphere and Malika Virdi, the driving force behind @voicesofmunsiari) for being my forever inspirations 💚 ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣ And of course, a massive thank you to each one of you for reading, sharing and supporting my work over the years, especially through the clutter of Instagram and the internet in general 😍👣

The truth is, it isn’t always easy being the person who follows their dreams. It isn’t always easy being the person who does things differently, who chooses their own journey. It isn’t easy feeling like you are falling behind, like you are existing in a completely different lane in comparison to your peers. Instead of seeing it as a setback, we have to embrace the different lane. And when it comes to following your dreams, you have to understand that it is so much more than quitting your day job and padding your life with freedom. Some of the greatest creatives and innovators in the world had day jobs. Henry Miller was a copywriter, and he hated it. But he did it because he knew that the security that came from a job allowed for him to pay for his apartment, and his food, and the writing utensils he used to pen his first novels. Maya Angelou was a cable car conductor. All of these greats did what they had to do in order to support themselves, but they never stopped elbowing their way into the world. They never stopped believing in their vision. They fought for it, no matter what life presented them with. Because that’s the thing — life will happen to you. It will weather you. But it will never defeat you. You just have to know your purpose, and believe in it with ruthless conviction. You have to be your biggest fan, even when it is difficult, even when you feel like you’re not a shining example of success. You have to keep going. Keep going and remind yourself that there will never be a perfect time to do things differently, or to pursue something that genuinely scares you. Following your passion doesn’t work like that. It is constant work, not just physically, but mentally. You will have to do the hard things. You will break and rebuild. You will find your resilience. You will roll with every circumstance that comes up for you. You will move forward. You will push towards the person you want to be, and the life you want to live, because while following your dreams is tough — you will always be tougher. . . . #postcardchronicles #travelmore #travelgram #indiatravelsquad #philippines #travelblogger
